Yang Se-chan's Electric Shock Incident: What to Watch Out for in Summer
Comedian Yang Se-chan recently shared his childhood experience with an electric shock. Appearing on the YouTube channel 'Gi-yu TV' hosted by the couple Kang Jae-joon and Lee Eun-hyung, he recalled a past accident, saying, "There's something I realized when I was young." Yang Se-chan reminisced about the moment he stuck a chopstick into an electrical outlet, stating, "I thought it would just spark, but as soon as I put it in, it went 'poof!'" When Lee Eun-hyung asked if he was hurt, Yang Se-chan replied, "I don't remember," adding, "I just collapsed." His experience serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of electric shock.
The Dangers of Household Voltage
The severity of an electric shock depends on factors such as the amount of current and the duration of contact. Electric shock accidents can occur not only with high-voltage industrial electricity but also with the 220V voltage used in homes. Since the human body operates on electrical signals, electric shock can lead to various health problems.
Nerve and muscle cells maintain a voltage difference of about 80mV across their cell membranes to transmit signals. When exposed to voltages above 110V, the external electrical energy can convert into thermal energy, causing burns. Not only the skin but also muscles, bones, nerves, and blood vessels can be damaged. In particular, if the current passes through the heart, it can lead to arrhythmia, an abnormal change in heart rhythm. This can disrupt blood circulation and pose a threat to life.
How to Respond to an Electric Shock Incident
In the event of an electric shock, prompt medical attention is necessary if symptoms such as arrhythmia, difficulty breathing, or loss of consciousness occur. First, move away from the object conducting electricity and call an ambulance. If someone discovers a person who has suffered an electric shock, it is crucial to follow these steps:
- Cut off the power supply to the wires or electrical devices.
- Use an insulator, such as a dry stick or rubber gloves, to move the victim away from the power source.
- If no suitable insulator is available, push the victim away with your foot while wearing shoes. However, ensure the shoe soles are made of rubber.
Tips for Preventing Electric Shock Accidents in Summer
During the rainy season, increased humidity raises the risk of electric shock accidents. It is advisable to use grounding when using electronic devices in damp environments. Special caution is needed when using electrical appliances like hair dryers in the bathroom. When plugging or unplugging devices, hold the main body of the plug for safety.
In case of a sudden power outage, unplug all electronic devices. If water damage has occurred, immediately turn off the circuit breaker in the distribution panel. These simple measures can help prevent electric shock accidents. Please always be cautious for your safety during the summer!
