Yura's Diet Journey and Healthy Strategies
Yura's Diet Experience: Lessons for Health
Actress Yura, formerly of the group Girl's Day, recently shared her dieting experiences on her YouTube channel. During a conversation with fellow actress Kim Hee-jung, with whom she co-starred in the movie 'Marrying the Mafia: Returns', Yura candidly discussed the side effects of starvation diets. She had maintained a weight of 47kg for four years, but due to drinking during filming, she gained 8kg in two months, reaching 56kg. Yura recalled her shock, saying, "My weight has never gone above 54kg in my life."
The Consequences of Extreme Dieting
Following this, Yura embarked on an extreme diet. She stopped drinking and reduced her food intake, losing 9kg. However, during this process, she experienced facial fat loss and signs of aging, leading people to ask if she was sick. Yura commented, "Losing weight when you're young is different from losing weight when you're older," highlighting the increasing difficulty of dieting with age.
The Problem with Starvation Diets
So, why are starvation diets problematic? When you drastically restrict your food intake to lose weight quickly, side effects like muscle loss can occur. A decrease in muscle mass lowers your basal metabolic rate, making it harder to maintain weight and increasing the likelihood of rebound weight gain (yo-yo effect). Furthermore, rapid weight loss can accelerate facial aging, leading to sunken cheeks and a tired appearance. These changes can become more pronounced, especially after the age of 30.
Dieting Strategies by Age Group
Dieting strategies should be tailored to different age groups. In one's 20s, when metabolism is active, it's crucial to establish healthy eating and exercise habits. Instead of extreme calorie restriction, adequate protein intake and regular exercise are essential.
- 30s: Focus on maintaining muscle mass. Combining strength training with dietary adjustments is more effective than simply reducing food intake.
- 40s: Shift the focus from just weight to body fat management. Monitor changes in waist circumference and body fat percentage.
- 50s and beyond: Muscle preservation is the top priority. Excessive weight loss can increase the risk of sarcopenia (muscle loss) and osteoporosis.
Experts emphasize that the goal of dieting should be fat loss and muscle preservation, rather than just weight reduction. A gradual weight loss of about 0.5-1kg per week is generally considered the safest rate. Instead of solely focusing on the number on the scale, it's important to track changes in muscle mass, body fat percentage, and waist circumference. As we age, it's crucial to remember that dieting is less about "eating less" and more about "eating well and losing weight healthily."
