Cosmetics Pose a High Risk of Being Mistaken for Food!

Recently, news broke that the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has cracked down on numerous cases of misleading cosmetic advertisements. This inspection specifically targeted cosmetics that could be mistaken for food by consumers. As a result, 95 products, including cupcake-shaped bath bombs and fruit or jelly-shaped soaps, which visually resemble food items, were identified. These products are primarily sold online, necessitating extra caution.

The Rise of 'Funsumer' Products

The term 'Funsumer' is gaining popularity among consumers these days. It signifies a new consumption trend that combines fun with purchasing. In particular, cosmetics designed to look like food items are capturing consumers' curiosity. However, it is crucial to clearly understand that these products are not actual food.

Types of Cosmetics Flagged

The types of cosmetics identified in this inspection include:

• Cosmetic soaps for body cleansing - 68 cases (72%)
• Bath bombs - 22 cases (23%)
• Body cleansers for body cleansing - 2 cases (2%)
• Lip balms for makeup - 1 case (1%)
• Hand creams for basic skincare - 1 case (1%)
• Body lotions for basic skincare - 1 case (1%)

These products are made in various food forms such as cupcakes, macarons, donuts, candies, rice cakes, jellies, and fruits, causing confusion among consumers.

Precautions for Safe Use

The MFDS is warning consumers that ingesting cosmetics mistaken for food can lead to severe side effects like vomiting and abdominal pain. Special care must be taken to keep these products out of reach of infants and young children. The ministry has stated that it will continue to strive to create a safer distribution environment for cosmetics going forward.
