The Link Between Obsession with Masculinity and Violence

The Connection Between Obsession with Masculinity and Violence

In modern society, expectations and stereotypes surrounding the male role remain deeply entrenched. Ideas like "men must be strong" or "men are the sole breadwinners" can lead to an obsession with masculinity, and recent research suggests this can be linked to various social problems. These studies provide crucial foundational data for a deeper exploration into the correlation between masculinity and violence.

What is the M factor?

Developed by a research team at the University of Zurich, the M factor is an index that measures the degree of acceptance of traditional male superiority, contempt for women, and controlling behaviors. This index assesses attitudes towards masculinity, with higher scores indicating a stronger tendency to support dominant and traditional notions of manhood. The study found that approximately 20% of the men surveyed recorded high M factor scores, with this proportion being particularly prominent among men aged 18-24.

The Influence of Socioeconomic Background

The research findings indicate that socioeconomic background significantly influences men's M factor scores. Men with lower levels of education and occupational status were more likely to record high M factor scores, whereas men with higher education showed relatively lower scores. Furthermore, family background and place of residence also acted as important variables, with men whose fathers were of foreign origin or who lived in suburban areas exhibiting higher M factor scores.

The Correlation with Violence

Interestingly, men with high M factor scores showed a greater acceptance of physical punishment and authoritarian parenting. They were also more likely to identify as 'involuntary celibates (Incel)', consume high-intensity pornography, use sex work services, and report experiencing or perpetrating violence in intimate relationships. Dr. Libo warned that the M factor acts as a consistent risk factor for violence occurring in intimate relationships.

The Need for Social Discussion on Masculinity

This study emphasizes that there is no single correct answer regarding masculinity and suggests the necessity of social discourse on the topic. It is particularly important, the study notes, to instill a proper understanding of masculinity from the school education stage. Additionally, the positive impact of fathers' active involvement in parenting on children's emotional and social development was highlighted. Isn't it our society's challenge to foster the healthy development of masculinity?
