Ko So-young's Ageless Beauty Secrets: Her Morning Routine Revealed

55-year-old Ko So-young reveals her secret to maintaining a youthful look with her morning lifting routine

Actress Ko So-young is drawing significant attention by revealing her secrets to maintaining a youthful appearance. Recently, on her YouTube channel, she introduced her morning routine, which she has followed for 30 years. Ko So-young starts her day with a light water cleanse, followed by applying moisturizer and then using a gua sha roller to help the product absorb. She then massaged her brow area and forehead, explaining, "It's to lift it so it doesn't sag." She emphasized that the face has many muscles and that not releasing tension in them can cause pain.

The Importance of Scalp Massage

Ko So-young also massaged her scalp with a comb-like gua sha tool. She repeatedly swept it from the front to the back of her head, stressing, "You need to properly release the scalp for a lifting effect." As she explained, the scalp, forehead, temples, and neck are all connected by skin and fascial tissues. Those with significant tension in these areas may feel that their face is less pulled and appears more relaxed after a massage.

Facial Gua Sha: Reducing Puffiness and Relieving Muscle Tension

As Ko So-young mentioned, the face indeed has many muscles. These muscles are involved in raising eyebrows, closing eyes, moving the corners of the mouth, and creating various expressions. Therefore, while using a gua sha roller doesn't directly increase collagen or elastin in the skin, the massage process improves blood and lymph circulation and relieves muscle tension, which can lead to reduced facial puffiness and a more defined contour.

When using a facial gua sha, it's best to apply sufficient moisturizer or oil after cleansing and then roll with gentle pressure, ensuring the skin is not pulled or dragged. Maintain the following directions:

  • Jawline: From the chin towards the earlobe
  • Cheeks: From beside the nose towards the cheekbone and ear
  • Eye area: From the inner corner outwards
  • Forehead: From above the eyebrows towards the hairline
  • Neck: Gently sweep downwards from behind the ear towards the collarbone

It's particularly advisable to avoid these areas if you have acne inflammation, wounds, eczema, sunburned skin, or bruises.

Scalp Massage and Facial Lifting Effects

Ko So-young emphasized that scalp massage helps relieve facial tension and increase blood flow, making the face feel lighter and less puffy. Releasing tension in the scalp can create a perceived effect of the "face being lifted" or "improved elasticity." The massage method is simple: slowly sweep a comb-like gua sha tool or your fingertips from the hairline on the forehead towards the crown, and from the crown towards the back of the head. Gently press around the temples and ears in a circular motion.

However, be careful not to scratch with your nails or rub so hard that your scalp turns red. It's also best to avoid this if you have seborrheic dermatitis, scalp wounds, inflammatory acne, or have recently undergone hair loss treatment. If your scalp becomes itchy, sensitive, or if dandruff or oozing increases after the massage, stop immediately.

Ko So-young's morning routine is a management method that greatly contributes to maintaining a youthful appearance. We hope you can also refer to her tips to cultivate healthy and beautiful skin!
