Recent research has unveiled a groundbreaking possibility: diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through a simple urine test. ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by challenges in social interaction and communication, along with restricted and repetitive behaviors. However, the diverse range of symptoms across individuals makes diagnosis a complex process.

The Complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder

As the name suggests, the spectrum of behaviors and their severity vary significantly among individuals with ASD, making diagnosis intricate. Typically, specialists meticulously observe the individual's behavior, conduct in-depth interviews with caregivers, and administer various developmental assessment tests. In some cases, parents may struggle to accept the diagnosis, or defense mechanisms can delay the initiation of timely treatment.

A New Diagnostic Pathway Opened by Urine Testing

In this context, a collaborative research team from Arizona State University, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Harvard Medical School has developed a method to diagnose ASD more quickly and accurately using a urine test. The researchers focused on analyzing the gut microbiome of children with ASD and typically developing children, noting the presence of specific metabolites at higher levels in children with ASD.

The research team discovered that these metabolites were not present in typically developing children. Based on these findings, they created a diagnostic system using urine tests. The system identifies ASD if even one of the 23 abnormal metabolites is detected in the urine sample.

Research Findings and Future Directions

In a randomized blind validation, 90% of children with ASD tested positive, while none of the typically developing children tested positive. This indicates that a urine test could be a promising tool for diagnosing ASD.

However, the research team emphasized the need for cautious interpretation of these results. They clarified that this does not mean the gut microbiome causes autism spectrum disorder, but rather that a strong association has been identified, opening a path for early diagnosis in high-risk individuals. They also stressed the necessity for formal clinical trials with larger sample sizes and more stringent control of variables.

The findings of this study have been published in the prestigious journal 《Molecular Psychiatry》, a leading publication in the field of psychiatry, presenting a new turning point in the diagnosis of ASD.
