Why Patients with Dyslipidemia Hesitate to Take Statins

The Importance of Dyslipidemia and Statin Therapy

We will explore why patients with dyslipidemia hesitate to take statins. Recent surveys indicate that many patients tend to believe they can stop medication once their low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels normalize. However, medical professionals warn that discontinuing statin therapy can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

30% of Dyslipidemia Patients Refuse Statins Due to Side Effects

Discrepancy in Perception Between Patients and Medical Professionals

According to the 'Statin Therapy Perception Survey' conducted by JW Pharmaceutical, approximately 50.8% of patients responded that they only need to take the medication until their LDL-C levels normalize. In contrast, 90.3% of medical professionals agreed on the impact of cardiovascular disease on life expectancy, while only 76.6% of patients concurred. This difference in perception highlights that patients tend to overlook the continuous need for treatment.

Concerns About Statin Side Effects

The primary reason patients are reluctant to take statins is the concern about side effects. The survey revealed that 30.8% of patients have hesitated or refused to take the medication even after being informed of its necessity. Among these, 50.1% cited concerns about side effects as the main reason.

  • 67.6% of patients have heard about the blood sugar-raising side effect of statins.
  • Of these, 49.4% expressed concerns about taking the medication due to this information.
  • Furthermore, 35.2% indicated that information about blood sugar side effects influenced their delay in starting treatment or discontinuation.

The Need for the 'Understand Statins' Campaign

Based on these survey results, JW Pharmaceutical plans to provide accurate information about statins to patients with dyslipidemia through the 'Understand Statins' campaign. This campaign aims to bridge the information gap between patients and medical professionals and to help patients with dyslipidemia manage their health continuously.

It is crucial to resolve the difference in perception between patients and medical professionals regarding the necessity of statin therapy and its side effects. Patients, why not try to gain accurate information about statin therapy and make consistent efforts to protect your health?
