Poppy Waves: The Beginning of Summer Travel

Just before roses fully bloom and hydrangeas start to appear, the early summer fields are briefly painted with the season of poppies. The waves of scarlet flowers stretching along riverbanks and fields create a beauty akin to a red carpet unfurled. The sight of petals swaying in the wind evokes a dreamlike atmosphere. However, the scenery of these flower paths can change quickly depending on the weather and rain, so it's highly recommended to visit before the full heat and monsoon season begin.

Haman Agyang Dike: A Poppy Hotspot

The Agyang Dike in Haman, Gyeongnam, is a renowned hotspot for poppies. Here, poppies are cultivated along the 7.2km round-trip dike and on the 13ha floodplains, creating picturesque landscapes where red poppies blend with white baby's breath. The flower fields stretch out along the wide dike, offering a different charm than typical festivals.

The Nam River flows on one side of the dike, while green fields and mountains stretch out on the other, providing a refreshing view to enjoy while admiring the flowers. Most of the paths are flat, making it easy for families or elderly couples to take a stroll. Although the spring flower viewing season has ended, the poppy fields remain, offering a peaceful walk. This place, where the river, fields, and red flower waves can all be seen at once, is perfect for experiencing a unique ambiance as early summer arrives.

Wonju Yongsu-gol Poppy Festival: Humble Charm

The Yongsu-gol Poppy Festival in Wonju, Gangwon Province, runs until June 7th. While not as grand as large tourist attractions, it offers a humble and warm atmosphere characteristic of flower fields cultivated by local villagers. This festival began in 2005 with a small flower garden tended by a resident and has grown into a local flower festival involving the entire community.

• The festival grounds span approximately 13,000 pyeong, featuring dense clusters of red poppies along with cornflowers, alliums, and baby's breath.
• Heart-shaped photo zones and walking paths through the flower fields are also available, attracting visitors eager to capture memorable photos.

The village setting nestled between mountains and fields adds to the cozy atmosphere. Walking slowly along the flower paths, the red blossoms and green mountain scenery blend into a fairytale-like space. The red umbrellas available for rent at the festival entrance can be used to shield from the sun or as photo props. You can also enjoy snacks like ice cream and slushies topped with poppy seeds, and purchase pots and seeds to continue the festival's charm at home.

Important Notes for Viewing Poppies

While commonly referred to as poppies, the flowers seen at festivals and scenic spots are ornamental poppies, specifically California poppies ( Eschscholzia californica). These are distinct from the opium poppy, which is prohibited due to its narcotic properties. The flowers we commonly see are California poppies, characterized by their red, delicate petals.

When visiting poppy destinations, it's essential to observe basic etiquette. Please refrain from picking the flowers or taking seeds from the festival grounds, and avoid stepping into the flower beds for photos. The early summer sun can be intense, so it's advisable to bring a hat, sunglasses, water, and apply sunscreen beforehand. Bees and butterflies are common around the flowers, so avoid getting too close for photos or disturbing them. It's also recommended to minimize the use of strong perfumes and wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking.
