Patients with dyslipidemia hesitant to take statins: reasons why

Importance of dyslipidemia and statin therapy

We will explore why patients with dyslipidemia hesitate to take statins. According to a recent survey, many patients tend to think they can stop taking the medication once their low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels normalize. However, medical professionals warn that discontinuing statin therapy may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

30% of patients with dyslipidemia refuse statins due to side effects

Discrepancy in perception between patients and medical professionals

According to the results of the 'Statin Treatment Perception Survey' conducted by JW Pharmaceutical, approximately 50.8% of patients responded that they only need to take the medication until their LDL-C levels normalize. On the other hand, 90.3% of medical professionals agreed on the impact of cardiovascular disease on life expectancy, while only 76.6% of patients agreed. This difference in perception indicates that patients are overlooking the continuous need for treatment.

Concerns about side effects of statin use

The biggest reason why patients are reluctant to take statins is the concern about side effects. According to the survey, 30.8% of patients responded that they had hesitated or refused to take the medication even after being told it was necessary. Among them, 50.1% stated that concerns about side effects were the main reason.

  • 67.6% of patients have heard about the side effect of statins causing increased blood sugar.
  • Of these, 49.4% responded that this information caused them to worry about taking the medication.
  • Furthermore, 35.2% said that information about blood sugar side effects influenced their delay in starting treatment or discontinuation.

The need for the 'Dangbu, Statin' campaign

Based on these survey results, JW Pharmaceutical plans to provide accurate information about statins to patients with dyslipidemia through the 'Dangbu, Statin' campaign. This campaign has been prepared to reduce the information gap between patients and medical professionals and to help patients with dyslipidemia manage their health continuously.

It is crucial to bridge the gap in perception between patients and medical professionals regarding the necessity of statin therapy and its side effects. Patients, why not try to learn accurate information about statin therapy and make consistent efforts to protect your health?
