Recent studies are increasingly highlighting the impact of microplastics on heart health. The discovery of micro- and nanoplastics in the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart, is particularly striking. A study conducted at a hospital in Rome, Italy, found that microplastics were most frequently detected in patients who had suffered acute myocardial infarctions. These findings compel us to reconsider the effects of environmental pollution in modern society on our well-being.
Background and Methodology of the Study
This research involved 61 patients undergoing coronary angiography at several Italian hospitals. These patients were categorized into three groups: those with acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction, those with chronic coronary syndrome, and a control group with normal coronary arteries. Researchers collected blood samples from each patient to analyze for micro- and nanoplastics, while also investigating smoking habits and air pollution levels.
Microplastic Detection Rates
The study revealed that micro- and nanoplastics were detected in 84% of patients with acute myocardial infarction. In contrast, the detection rate was 40% for patients with chronic coronary syndrome and 32% for the control group. The concentration of plastic particles in the blood was also highest in patients with acute myocardial infarction, with various types of plastics identified. Notably, polyethylene was the most commonly detected, a material widely used in packaging and consumer goods.
The Influence of Smoking and Air Pollution
The research team also emphasized a strong correlation between smoking, air pollution, and the detection of microplastics. Patients with long-term exposure to fine particulate matter like PM2.5 showed a higher likelihood of detecting microplastics in their blood. Smokers were six times more likely to have microplastics detected compared to non-smokers. Intriguingly, plastic particles were found in all cases among patients exposed to both smoking and air pollution.
Microplastics and Inflammation: A Potential Link
Interestingly, patients with a higher presence of plastic particles in their blood also exhibited elevated levels of inflammatory markers such as TNF-α and interleukin-6. This suggests that microplastic exposure may be associated with systemic inflammation. However, the researchers stressed that these findings alone should not lead to the conclusion that microplastics are a direct cause of heart attacks.
