Recently, news broke that Bumin Hospital has successfully completed its 5,500th cumulative robotic knee replacement surgery. This significant milestone, achieved across its three specialized joint centers – Seoul Bumin Hospital, Busan Bumin Hospital, and Haeundae Bumin Hospital – reflects the hospital's unwavering commitment to providing patients with safer and more effective surgical outcomes.

The Significance of Robotic Surgery

Knee replacement surgery is more than just replacing a worn-out joint. Each patient presents unique variations in leg axis, bone structure, and the degree of joint deformity. Therefore, the precise angle and position at which the artificial joint is placed can significantly impact post-operative pain, gait, and the recovery process. Since introducing the Mako robot in September 2020 through a partnership with Stryker Korea, Bumin Hospital has continuously enhanced surgical precision by utilizing a variety of robotic systems, including the domestic CUVIS robot and Smith & Nephew's CORI system.

At the core of Bumin Hospital's robotic surgery approach lies meticulous planning and execution. The hospital develops personalized surgical plans tailored to each patient's condition. Pre-operatively, imaging data is analyzed to assess bone structure and the extent of joint deformity. Global Collaboration and Continuous Research

Bumin Hospital is actively collaborating with the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), a leading orthopedic hospital in the United States, to advance research aimed at standardizing and improving the accuracy of robotic joint replacement surgeries. The annual 'Robotic Joint Replacement Symposium' brings together orthopedic specialists from various countries, including the US, Japan, India, and Singapore, to share the latest clinical experiences and surgical know-how.

The '5th Symposium of the Korean Society for Computer Assisted Orthopedic Surgery,' scheduled for May 30th at the Paradise City Hotel in Incheon, is another initiative in this research endeavor. The symposium will focus on discussing the latest clinical experiences in robotic knee and hip surgeries and exploring the application of robotics in complex cases.

Chairman Jeong Heung-tae emphasized, "When a surgeon's skilled technique is augmented by the precision of robotics, we can deliver better outcomes for patients." He added, "The 5,500 cases represent not just a number, but a testament to the trust and hope patients place in us for a safer and faster return to their daily lives."
