7 Things to Avoid When You're Angry
When you're feeling angry, there are several things you should definitely avoid. Otherwise, the situation can get much worse. Today, I'm going to share 7 things you should absolutely never do when you're angry. Keep these in mind, and I hope they help you the next time you feel that way!
1. Don't go to bed angry!
Studies show that sleeping while angry can intensify negative emotions. Sleep medicine experts explain that sleep helps process and consolidate information from our waking hours. So, after an argument, it's crucial to calm your emotions before drifting off to sleep.
2. Don't drive!
Driving while angry significantly increases the risk of accidents. Research indicates that anger can lead to aggressive behavior and 'tunnel vision,' making it difficult to see your surroundings properly. So, if you're angry, absolutely avoid driving!
3. Don't use food to cope with emotions!
When we're angry, we often feel the urge to seek comfort in food. However, this can actually backfire. Experts note that people tend to crave high-sugar, high-fat foods when stressed. Be mindful, as these kinds of meals can cause digestive issues.
4. Don't prolong arguments!
When you're angry, you might say things during a heated discussion that you'll later regret. In such cases, it's best to call for a 'time out' and pause the conversation. This time out could be 10 minutes or even 10 days. Resuming the conversation after calming your mind and body allows you to express yourself more consciously and intentionally.
5. Don't post your emotions on social media!
Expressing your anger on social media can lead to irreversible consequences. Particularly when conveying emotions via platforms like Facebook or email, you might regret it later, so this is another behavior to avoid.
6. Don't use alcohol to soothe your emotions!
Drinking alcohol after getting angry can actually worsen the situation. Alcohol impairs your ability to control impulses, potentially leading you to act in ways you'll regret. It's much better to find other ways to release your anger.
7. Don't ignore your blood pressure!
Finally, it's important to check your blood pressure after experiencing anger. Studies suggest that the risk of heart attack or stroke increases within two hours of an anger outburst. This is especially crucial for individuals with high blood pressure.
In today's stressful times, we need the wisdom to manage our anger through exercise, sufficient sleep, and our own personal methods. I wish you always healthy and happy times!
