Diluted Japanese Shochu: Impact on Health

A recent case in Japan serves as a stark reminder of the profound impact alcohol consumption can have on one's health. A man, who habitually drank three glasses of Mizuwari – Japanese shochu diluted with water – every morning, faced severe health consequences. His condition highlights that the repercussions of drinking can extend far beyond the immediate effects of alcohol.

Risks and health problems of excessive Japanese shochu consumption

Japanese Shochu vs. Korean Soju: What's the Difference?

Many might assume Japanese shochu and Korean soju are the same, but these beverages differ significantly in alcohol content and serving size. Korean diluted soju typically has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of around 16-20% and is served in small shot glasses of about 50ml. In contrast, Japan's traditional shochu, known as Shochu, generally has a higher ABV of around 25%. The Mizuwari style, where shochu is mixed with water, is often served in larger glasses. In fact, a single glass of Mizuwari can contain the equivalent of three glasses of Korean soju.

Alcohol Dependence and Health Complications

This patient was in a state of chronic alcohol consumption, drinking approximately 400ml of shochu daily. This excessive intake severely impacted his body, ultimately leading to hospitalization. Blood tests revealed he was suffering from hyponatremia and severe malnutrition. Neurologically, he experienced sensory disturbances in his toes and a loss of reflexes. The research team concluded that his condition had progressed to alcohol-related peripheral neuropathy and osmotic demyelination syndrome.

What is Osmotic Demyelination Syndrome?

Osmotic Demyelination Syndrome (ODS) typically occurs when sodium levels are rapidly corrected in patients with hyponatremia, usually through intravenous fluids. However, in this patient's case, chronic alcohol abuse and malnutrition had weakened his brain cells, making them susceptible to damage even without rapid electrolyte shifts. This resulted in severe damage to his brain and spinal cord, impairing central nervous system function.

The Importance of Prevention and Treatment

This case underscores the critical need to reconsider the relationship between alcohol consumption and health. Alcohol dependence can lead to serious neurological problems that go beyond mere drinking habits. If you experience symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea after drinking, it's crucial to seek medical attention immediately. These symptoms can disrupt the body's electrolyte balance, potentially leading to severe health issues.

In conclusion, enjoying alcohol in moderation is key, and individuals with chronic drinking habits must pay close attention to their health status. To safeguard your well-being, it's advisable to evaluate your drinking habits and seek professional help if necessary.
