Blood Sugar Management: Post-Meal Actions are Key!
The Importance of Blood Sugar Management
Recently, blood sugar management has been gaining significant attention in the health and diet spheres. While many tend to focus solely on what they eat to control their blood sugar, post-meal actions are actually a crucial factor. Experts warn that the habit of lying down immediately after a meal can cause blood sugar levels to spike rapidly.
Don't Lie Down Right After Eating!
Pharmacist Kim So-jung, widely known as 'Pharmacist Lily,' shared insights on 'the worst blood sugar habits' via her social media. She identified lying down immediately after a meal as the worst habit, followed by lack of sleep. Pharmacist Kim emphasized, "The habit of lying down within 30 minutes to an hour after eating must be corrected," and stressed that "a light walk is the best method."
The Benefits of a Light Walk
Light physical activity after a meal greatly aids in blood sugar control. Lying down or sitting for extended periods immediately after eating reduces muscle activity, leading to decreased glucose consumption. Consequently, glucose remains in the bloodstream longer, increasing the risk of elevated blood sugar. In contrast, a light walk after a meal allows muscles to actively use glucose, thereby reducing the spike in blood sugar levels.
Furthermore, muscle contractions during exercise enhance the effectiveness of insulin. This is because glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4) moves to the cell surface, increasing the ability to absorb blood sugar. Therefore, even light activity after a meal can be expected to help regulate blood sugar.
Blood Sugar Stability Through Research Findings
A study conducted by researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand on individuals with type 2 diabetes found that those who walked for 10 minutes after meals had lower post-meal blood sugar levels compared to those who walked for 30 minutes once a day. The results particularly showed the greatest improvement in blood sugar when walking after dinner. The research team explained, "Moving muscles after a meal helps rapidly consume glucose in the blood."
The Impact of Sleep Deprivation
The second major enemy of blood sugar management pointed out by Pharmacist Kim is sleep deprivation. Insufficient sleep increases the secretion of the stress hormone cortisol, which in turn reduces insulin sensitivity. This means blood sugar levels can rise higher even after consuming the same foods. Several studies have also linked sleeping less than 5-6 hours per night to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
Pharmacist Kim stressed, "Quality sleep is a key factor not only for blood sugar but for overall health," adding, "Lack of sleep can decrease insulin sensitivity, negatively impacting blood sugar control." While it's often difficult to avoid sleep deprivation in reality, managing it is important.
Therefore, for effective blood sugar management, it is essential to incorporate light movement after meals and ensure sufficient sleep. Maintain stable blood sugar levels through healthy lifestyle habits!
