Daewoong Pharmaceutical's Enblo Shows Promise in Improving Fatty Liver in Diabetes Patients
Recent attention has turned to Enblo, a new diabetes drug developed by Daewoong Pharmaceutical, following findings that it may improve fatty liver in patients with type 2 diabetes. Enblo is generating excitement as it holds the potential to evolve into a treatment that not only manages blood sugar but also addresses fatty liver, a common comorbidity with diabetes.
Research Findings on Enblo
Daewoong Pharmaceutical has announced research results indicating Enblo, a new SGLT-2 inhibitor class diabetes drug, has the potential to improve liver steatosis. This study was published in the international journal 'Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism'. SGLT-2 inhibitors are known type 2 diabetes treatments that work by blocking glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, leading to its excretion in urine.
Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) and Enblo
This research evaluated the potential of Enblo to improve Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), a condition frequently observed in diabetes patients. MASLD is characterized by excessive fat accumulation in the liver due to metabolic dysfunction and can lead to liver and cardiovascular diseases if left untreated. With the rising prevalence of MASLD among type 2 diabetes patients, the need for treatments that address liver metabolism improvements, beyond just blood sugar control, is becoming increasingly critical.
Analysis of Clinical Trial Results
To support Enblo's market approval, researchers conducted an integrated analysis of clinical trial data from 587 type 2 diabetes patients over a 24-week treatment period. Fatty liver levels were measured using the Hepatic Steatosis Index (HSI) and the Framingham Steatosis Index (FSI). At the start of the study, approximately half of all patients had accompanying fatty liver. The results showed a higher proportion of patients in the Enblo treatment group experienced a reduction in fatty liver levels.
- According to the HSI assessment, the number of fatty liver patients in the Enblo group decreased from 36 (48.0%) to 12 (16.0%), indicating an improvement to normal ranges for approximately 67% of patients.
- Based on the FSI, the number of patients in the high-risk group reduced from 31 (41.3%) to 12 (16.0%), showing an improvement to normal ranges for about 61%.
Significance and Expectations for Enblo
This study is considered significant as it marks the first confirmation that Enblo can improve fatty liver indicators in type 2 diabetes patients. Notably, when compared to Dapagliflozin, another drug in the same class, the Enblo group demonstrated a greater improvement in fatty liver levels. The corresponding author of the study stated, "We have confirmed Enblo's potential to positively impact not only blood sugar control but also the reduction of fat accumulation in the liver."
Park Hyung-cheol, head of Daewoong Pharmaceutical's ETC Marketing Division, commented, "These research findings demonstrate that Enblo can offer additional therapeutic benefits beyond blood sugar control, including improvements in fatty liver indicators." Given that Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease is present in over 65% of type 2 diabetes patients, the therapeutic value of Enblo is highly anticipated.
