Man Nearly Loses Vision After Believing Superstition About Eye Twitching

Eye Twitching: A Misfortune Fueled by Superstition

Eye twitching and superstition, risk of vision loss

Recently, a man in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, was diagnosed with retinal detachment due to his right eyelid twitching. He believed a common Chinese superstition that "a twitching right eye signifies bad luck" and repeatedly hit his eye. This led to him nearly losing his vision, ultimately requiring medical treatment.

The Consequences of Relying on Superstition

Mr. Lu experienced twitching in his right eyelid for several days. Anxious, he tried resting his eye and applying warm compresses, but the symptom didn't improve. He eventually came across claims online that hitting the eyelid could ward off bad luck. Guided by this belief, he began hitting the area around his eye for three days. While the twitching stopped, he soon experienced a drastic narrowing of his field of vision.

Causes and Symptoms of Eyelid Twitching

Eyelid twitching is a very common symptom, often caused by factors like fatigue, stress, and excessive caffeine intake. According to the Mayo Clinic in the US, eyelid twitching can be triggered by the following:

  • Excessive caffeine intake
  • Eye strain
  • Stress
  • Alcohol or nicotine use
  • Exposure to bright light

Additionally, irritation of the eye's surface, pollution, blepharitis, or dry eyes can also cause eyelid twitching. If the twitching is accompanied by spasms on one side of the face, hemifacial spasm should also be considered.

How to Deal with Eyelid Twitching

When eyelid twitching occurs, getting enough sleep and rest is crucial. Adjusting your lifestyle can significantly help alleviate the symptoms. Try these methods:

  • Get sufficient sleep
  • Eat a balanced diet
  • Manage stress
  • Reduce caffeine intake

Furthermore, if you use nicotine products, it's advisable to stop. However, lifestyle changes don't resolve all cases. If symptoms persist or affect your vision, it's essential to consult a specialist.

Protecting Your Eye Health

Eyelid twitching can often be unpredictable or have unclear causes. Therefore, it's important to cultivate habits that promote safe eye health:

  • Adequate sleep and rest
  • Regular eye check-ups
  • Managing fatigue and stress
  • Reducing excessive caffeine and nicotine intake

When eyelid twitching occurs, even if it seems minor, it's good to pay attention. Always be mindful and take care of your eyes for good health.
