The Golden Recipe and Tips for Boiling Corn

Summer is the season for corn. It's the perfect time to enjoy this corn with its appealing chewy and plump texture. Today, I'll share a golden recipe for boiling corn at home that brings out its natural flavor and texture, resulting in moist and delicious corn.

How to Boil Corn Deliciously, Must-Read Tips for Homemakers

Preparing the Corn

First, neatly remove the outer husks and silks from the corn. Instead of removing all the husks, it's best to leave about one layer of the innermost leaves. Leaving the leaves helps prevent moisture from evaporating from the kernels while boiling, thus maintaining a moister and more tender texture.

Once prepped, wash the corn thoroughly under running water to remove any debris. If the bottom part of the cob is too long, trim it neatly with scissors or by breaking it off by hand.

Don't discard the corn silks either! Wash them thoroughly under running water and add them to the pot. Boiling them with the corn imparts a savory and subtle aroma that deeply infuses the corn, elevating its flavor to a more sophisticated level.

Boiling the Corn

Arrange the prepared corn snugly in the pot, stacking them in 2 or 3 layers. Stacking the corn closely together allows heat to circulate well internally, ensuring more delicious cooking. Add just enough water to cover the bottom layer of corn.

  • Add 1/2 tablespoon of coarse salt to season. Salt enhances the corn's sweetness and brings out its natural umami flavor.
  • If you prefer corn with even richer sweetness, you can add a small amount of sugar or artificial sweetener according to your preference. For a subtle sweetness, add 1/2 tablespoon of sugar; for enhanced umami, add a tiny pinch of artificial sweetener.

Cover the pot tightly and begin cooking. Initially, set the heat to medium-high and boil vigorously for 10 minutes to quickly raise the temperature inside the pot. Once the water starts to simmer, reduce the heat to medium and let it simmer gently for about 15 to 20 minutes, allowing it to cook through to the core.

During the boiling process, it's a good idea to open the lid and flip the corn or rearrange their positions once. This ensures that the corn at the top also receives even heat and moisture from the pot, so all kernels cook evenly without any tough spots, resulting in a uniformly moist and tender texture.

The Secret to Perfect Corn

Once the corn is cooked, don't remove it immediately. Turn off the heat, keep the lid on, and let it steam for 10 minutes. This steaming process allows the heat to dissipate gradually, evenly distributing moisture to each kernel. It prevents the kernels from becoming tough or dry, completing the perfect texture.

Now, your perfectly boiled corn is ready to be enjoyed! This summer, gather your family and savor some delicious steamed corn with a refreshing drink. It's truly delightful!
