Tregzii, a cell therapy approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is set to offer a new option for blood cancer transplant treatments. This therapy is designed to focus on reducing the risk of graft-versus-host disease, a serious complication that can occur after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. How Tregzii Works
Tregzii is a therapy that involves redesigning the components of traditional hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Tregzii selectively isolates and combines the necessary cells from the donor's blood. A key player in this process is the regulatory T cell. These cells help suppress excessive immune responses, aiding the patient's blood and immune system in recovering healthily post-transplant.
Clinical Trial Results and Survival Rates
The efficacy of Tregzii has been demonstrated through the Phase 3 clinical trial, Precision-T. This study involved 187 patients with various blood cancers. The survival rate without chronic graft-versus-host disease for the group treated with Tregzii was 78%. In contrast, the conventional standard transplant group showed a rate of only 38.4%. Furthermore, the incidence of moderate to severe chronic graft-versus-host disease was significantly lower in the Tregzii group at 12.6%, compared to 44% in the standard transplant group. These results indicate that Tregzii can significantly contribute to improving patients' recovery potential.
Treatment Accessibility and Cost
Given its nature as a cell therapy, the manufacturing and supply process is a crucial factor for Tregzii's accessibility. OrcaBio is currently producing Tregzii at its manufacturing facility in California, USA, and has established a system to complete the process from donor cell collection to hospital administration within 72 hours. However, the price of Tregzii is approximately 665 million Korean Won (around $500,000 USD), making the treatment cost quite high. OrcaBio explains that this price is considered reasonable as it can reduce the overall medical expenses associated with chronic graft-versus-host disease.
Future Outlook and Challenges
OrcaBio plans to expand Tregzii's supply chain to approximately 25 treatment centers in the future. They are also preparing to meet increasing demand by establishing a new manufacturing facility in New Jersey. However, securing treatment centers and the coordination of donor cell collection and transportation will be significant challenges. While Tregzii holds great potential to become a new hope in blood cancer treatment, it is essential to address various hurdles in its practical commercialization process.
