Ach-ui is a small village located in Acheon-dong, Guri-si, Gyeonggi-do. This place holds a special story from the Korean War. The people of Ach-ui share the pain of war and cherish the memories of survival. Today, through the story of Ach-ui, we aim to reflect on the preciousness of memory and the meaning it holds.

In 1950, the Korean War broke out. At that time, my father, as a soldier, was unable to cross the Han River and took refuge in Ach-ui. His story of survival, with the help of the villagers there, makes us feel the pain of war. The residents of Ach-ui mobilized various methods to protect my father. His hidden story is not just a record of survival, but a testament to human solidarity and gratitude.

The Structure of Memory and the Story of Survival

In my father's memory, Ach-ui is more than just a place. The extreme circumstances he faced during the war made those memories deeper and stronger. The survival story in Ach-ui is likely the most firmly consolidated memory in my father's brain, intertwined with the horrors of war, the kindness of the villagers, and the longing for loved ones.

Time spent drinking tea is conducive to recalling memories. The environment created by tea calms the mind, putting one in a state favorable for reminiscing. This is likely why my father often spoke of his experiences in Ach-ui. The act of drinking tea encourages looking back at the past and greatly aids in reconsolidating those memories. The survival story in Ach-ui was repeatedly recalled throughout my father's life, strengthening the memory.

Memory is not mere data. Significant events in our lives are reinforced through repeated recall. The Ach-ui incident is now also my story, and I have the responsibility to preserve its memory.

This year marks the 77th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War. Although much time has passed, the story of Ach-ui remains deeply etched in my heart. Even if the day comes when my own memories fade, the memory of Ach-ui will endure forever. I want to remember my father's story and pass it on to the next generation.
