Vascular Health for Office Workers Who Sit for Long Hours
In modern society, many people spend most of their day sitting. Especially for office workers and students, a sedentary lifestyle has become the norm. However, recent studies have shown that even regular exercise to build physical fitness cannot completely counteract the negative effects of prolonged sitting on vascular health.
The Dangers of a Sedentary Lifestyle
Researchers at Dalhousie University in Canada investigated whether a 12-week high-intensity interval training program could prevent the decline in leg vascular function associated with prolonged sitting. Of the 21 healthy adults who participated, 11 engaged in a high-intensity exercise program, while the remaining 10 maintained their usual physical activity levels. Interestingly, while aerobic fitness significantly improved over the 12 weeks of exercise, the decline in vascular function during prolonged sitting still occurred.
Exercise Alone Isn't Enough
It was previously believed that regular exercise could somewhat offset the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle. However, the results of this study suggest that this notion needs re-evaluation. The endothelial function and vascular smooth muscle function measured by the researchers declined after just 2 hours of sitting, with no significant changes observed before and after exercise. Notably, the blood flow response in the popliteal artery continued to decrease even after exercise.
What Can We Do?
So, what efforts should we make to maintain vascular health? Lead researcher Professor Derek Kimmerly stated, "Many people believe they can compensate for the effects of sitting all day through exercise, but this study shows that improving aerobic fitness alone is not enough to protect blood vessels." Therefore, the following strategies can be considered:
- Take regular breaks to stand up and move around to reduce prolonged sitting time.
- Perform simple stretches or walk in place.
- Maintain cardiovascular health by incorporating regular exercise.
Conclusion
This study confirms that prolonged sitting itself can be an independent risk factor for vascular health. Therefore, it is crucial for office workers and students to periodically get up from their seats to walk or stretch. While exercise is beneficial for cardiovascular health, more diverse efforts are needed to offset the impact of sitting time.
