A New Hope for Overcoming Breast Cancer Resistance
One of the greatest challenges for breast cancer patients is treatment resistance. The situation where drugs no longer work during treatment can bring despair to many patients. However, the bio-venture company Curient has recently ignited a new spark of hope. They announced that the first patient has been dosed in the Phase 2 clinical trial of their new drug candidate, Mocasinclip (Q901).
Curient and the Current State of Breast Cancer Treatment
Curient, a KOSDAQ-listed bio-company spun off from the Korea Pasteur Institute in 2008, is focusing on the development of new drugs for cancer and tuberculosis. Breast cancer is currently a major global issue, and particularly HR+/HER2- breast cancer accounts for about 70% of all breast cancer cases. Current standard treatments include Pfizer's Ibrance, Novartis's Kisqali, and Eli Lilly's Verzenio. These drugs are all CDK4/6 inhibitors, which inhibit proteins that promote cell division, thereby halting cancer cell growth.
The Problem of Resistance and Curient's Approach
The problem is resistance. During treatment, cancer cells may find alternative pathways to resume proliferation, narrowing the treatment options. Mocasinclip, which Curient is developing, takes a different approach than existing drugs. While current drugs directly inhibit CDK4/6, Mocasinclip targets CDK7, which oversees the entire cell division process, including CDK4/6. In essence, it aims to overcome resistance by targeting the root cause.
Expectations and Competition in Phase 2 Trials
This Phase 2 clinical trial targets HR+ breast cancer patients who have developed resistance to standard treatments. Curient plans to use Mocasinclip in combination with the hormone therapy drug Fulvestrant to confirm its anti-cancer efficacy. The competition to develop CDK7 inhibitors is also fierce. The UK-based company Carrick Therapeutics is developing a drug called Samuraciclib, which demonstrated potential by showing a 55% tumor reduction response rate in a resistant patient group during its Phase 2 trial. Carrick is preparing to enter Phase 3 trials this year.
Mocasinclip's Safety and Efficacy
According to Curient, Mocasinclip has demonstrated safety and tolerability in its previous Phase 1 clinical trial. This Phase 2 trial is designed to verify its efficacy in actual patients with resistance. Curient's CEO, Ki-yeon Nam, stated, "We aim to provide a new treatment option for HR+ breast cancer patients who have developed resistance to standard therapies." While it will take more time to see the clinical results, the competition for this market, valued at $14.6 billion, has already begun.
