Celltrion Commences Primate Studies for Novel Obesity Drug CT-G32
Celltrion recently announced the commencement of primate toxicity studies for its next-generation obesity treatment candidate, CT-G32. This marks a significant development, offering new hope in the fight against obesity, with plans to enter clinical trials in the first half of next year.
CT-G32: A Groundbreaking Obesity Treatment
CT-G32 is an innovative obesity treatment candidate that simultaneously targets four pathways, including Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1). It aims to maximize weight loss effects by addressing the limitations of existing GLP-1-based therapies. Notably, it shows potential for improving issues such as inter-patient variability in weight loss, muscle loss, and treatment durability.
Toxicity Studies for Safety Evaluation
These toxicity studies will involve 252 rats and 48 monkeys. This phase is crucial for evaluating the safety and toxicological profile of CT-G32, laying the groundwork for determining appropriate dosages and ensuring safety in future clinical trials. Celltrion also stated that pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) properties will be further verified alongside toxicity assessments.
Preclinical Achievements
Celltrion reported that CT-G32 demonstrated superior weight loss effects compared to control drugs at equivalent doses in previous preclinical studies. Furthermore, results indicated preservation of lean body mass (LBM), suggesting a high potential for this treatment to be effective.
A New Turning Point for Global Clinical Development
Based on these preclinical data, Celltrion plans to submit an Investigational New Drug (IND) application in the first half of next year, officially launching its global clinical development. The company is also exploring the potential for expanding indications beyond obesity to metabolic diseases such as diabetes and fatty liver (MASH), making its future endeavors highly anticipated.
Additionally, Celltrion is collaborating with Japan's Scohia Pharma on the joint development of CT-G32. This strategic partnership aims to drive the entire development process, including preclinical, clinical, and global commercialization, thereby strengthening Celltrion's competitiveness in the global market.
