Effective Ways to Wash Peaches and Helpful Tips

Peaches are a popular summer fruit, loved for their sweet and refreshing taste. However, their fuzzy skin can often make washing them feel like a chore. Today, we’ll share some effective washing methods and tips to help you enjoy your peaches even more deliciously and freshly.

How to Wash Peaches: Removing Fuzz and Keeping Them Fresh

Rinse Under Running Water First

When washing peaches, avoid rubbing them while dry. This can actually make the fuzz stick more and potentially damage the fruit's flesh. So, it’s best to first rinse them thoroughly under running water for about 20-30 seconds, then gently roll them in your palm to wash. Be careful not to use a dry scrubber or rough brush, as this can peel the skin or cause the juices to leak, reducing freshness. Gently rubbing the peaches against each other can also help remove fuzz.

Use Coarse Salt to Remove Fuzz

If there’s still a lot of fuzz left on your peaches, try sprinkling a pinch of coarse salt. The salt granules help to dislodge the fuzz and any debris from the surface. Be sure not to apply too much pressure, and gently rub for about 30 seconds before rinsing thoroughly under running water to remove all the salt. Avoid rubbing for too long or soaking them in saltwater, as this can make the flesh mushy.

Clean Thoroughly with Baking Soda

If you plan to eat your peaches with the skin on, try using baking soda. Dissolve about 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1 liter of water, soak the peaches for 1-2 minutes, and then gently rub them with your hands. This effectively removes any remaining dirt and debris from the surface. However, be cautious, as soaking them for too long can cause the flesh to absorb water and affect the texture. After washing, be sure to rinse them multiple times under running water to ensure no baking soda residue remains.

Keep Them Fresh by Drying

Just as important as washing your peaches is drying them properly. If moisture is left on the skin, it can easily become soft and increase the risk of mold growth. After washing, gently pat them dry with a paper towel or a clean, dry cloth before refrigerating. If you don’t plan to eat them right away, it’s best to wash them just before consumption for maximum freshness. Eating them with the skin on also allows you to consume beneficial antioxidants like polyphenols.

With these simple methods, you can enjoy your peaches even more deliciously and healthily. Be sure to remember these tips the next time you buy or eat peaches! You'll be able to enjoy them fresher and tastier.
