Spinal Cord Infarction: The Cause of Paralysis During Stretching
A recent case has been reported of a young man experiencing sudden leg paralysis during stretching. While lightly stretching during his studies, he lost strength in his legs and became unable to walk. Initially thought to be a simple muscle issue, the underlying cause was a serious condition known as spinal cord infarction. This case was recently published in the international medical journal 《Cureus》, reported by medical staff from the Department of Radiology at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Sains Malaysia.
What is Spinal Cord Infarction?
Spinal cord infarction is a condition caused by a blockage in the blood vessels supplying the spinal cord, leading to insufficient blood flow. The spinal cord is a crucial neural pathway connecting the brain and the body. When blood supply to this area is cut off, nerve cells can be damaged. This operates on a similar principle to stroke (cerebral infarction), which occurs when blood vessels in the brain are blocked.
Case Analysis: The Cause of Sudden Paralysis
During stretching, this young man heard a 'pop' sound in his back, felt severe lower back pain, and subsequently lost strength in both legs, leading him to seek medical attention. An Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan confirmed spinal cord infarction. Medical professionals emphasized that spinal cord infarction should be suspected in young patients presenting with sudden paralysis or sensory disturbances.
Connection to Past Trauma
The medical team also noted that this patient had a history of a fall accident four years prior. He did not receive treatment for this incident, suggesting a possibility that the blood vessels around his spine may have been weakened by the accident. The theory proposed is that the weakened blood vessels may have become blocked due to the sudden stretching. Indeed, a CT scan of the patient's cervical spine revealed bone fragments from the past accident, serving as crucial evidence indicating the significant impact of that incident on his blood vessels.
Symptoms and Precautions
Symptoms of spinal cord infarction include sudden lower back pain, leg weakness, and decreased sensation. These symptoms can easily be mistaken for simple muscle strain or a herniated disc, necessitating caution. It is crucial to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms rapidly worsen or if walking becomes difficult. Doctors warned, "Spinal cord infarction is a very rare condition, but it must be suspected whenever sudden paralysis occurs."
In conclusion, it is important for everyone, even healthy individuals, not to dismiss leg weakness after stretching or exercise as mere muscle soreness but to seek prompt medical evaluation. May this case serve as an opportunity for all of us to cherish our health even more.
