The Importance of Breakfast and Blood Sugar Management

The Importance of Breakfast

Lately, fewer people are eating traditional Korean breakfasts like rice, soup, and side dishes in the morning. Especially among busy office workers, it's become common to skip a full meal and opt for just a cup of coffee and a piece of bread. Some might add vegetables or fruits for health, but breakfast tends to be a simpler meal compared to lunch or dinner. In fact, many people skip breakfast altogether. But is it really okay to neglect your morning meal? Let's take another look at the connection between breakfast and health.

The effect of bread and coffee in the morning on blood sugar

Why Three Meals a Day is Recommended

Doctors recommend eating three meals a day. In particular, diabetologists and obesity specialists emphasize that dividing your daily calorie intake into three meals helps with blood sugar and weight management. It's more efficient to consume adequate amounts of protein across these three meals, and eating smaller portions more frequently is generally better for your health than consuming large amounts at once. Having protein-rich foods like eggs or fish for breakfast can also help prevent overeating at lunch, ultimately contributing to weight control. Overeating is one of the worst habits when it comes to preventing and managing diabetes and obesity. Therefore, three meals a day is the best approach.

Let's Reduce Blood Sugar Fluctuations

According to data from the Korean Diabetes Association, in 2022, there were 5.33 million people with diabetes in Korea and 14 million people in the pre-diabetic stage. Alarmingly, 1.35 million people with diabetes were unaware of their condition and continued unhealthy eating habits. Skipping breakfast can lead to hypoglycemia, causing decreased energy and dizziness, which can disrupt daily life. This can then lead to overeating at lunch, causing rapid swings between low and high blood sugar levels, increasing overall blood sugar variability. Therefore, reducing blood sugar fluctuations is crucial for effective blood sugar management.

A Nutritionally Balanced Breakfast

Even if you eat breakfast, just a cup of coffee and a piece of bread is not a good dietary choice. Coffee on an empty stomach can irritate the stomach lining and worsen symptoms of gastritis. Additionally, refined carbohydrate bread made from white flour can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar. Even when you're in a hurry, it's best to aim for nutritional balance by including vegetables (for fiber and vitamins), eggs or fish (for protein), olive oil or perilla oil (for healthy fats), and whole wheat bread (for carbohydrates). Preparing vegetables or boiled eggs the night before can make it easy to eat a healthy breakfast. It's also better to drink coffee between 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM, rather than on an empty stomach.

The Importance of Post-Meal Activity

If you're an office worker, taking the subway after lunch can provide natural opportunities for walking and climbing stairs. This is beneficial for blood sugar and weight management, and it also saves time. For homemakers, going for a walk in the morning is recommended. Alternatively, walking in the living room or doing exercises like squats to avoid the heat are also good options. Moving your body between 30 minutes and 1 hour after a meal helps stabilize blood sugar levels and is effective in reducing body fat. Even if it's challenging, consistently engaging in physical activity after meals can significantly aid in diabetes prevention and management, and naturally contribute to weight loss.
