Mastering Watermelon Prep: Essential Tips and Techniques for Summer
As summer approaches, many of us look forward to enjoying cool, sweet watermelon. However, its size and thick rind can make preparation a bit of a chore. Today, we'll share some tips to make cutting and preparing your watermelon more efficient.
Let's Start with the Prep!
First, sprinkle baking soda evenly over the surface of your watermelon. Then, gently rub it with your hands while rinsing it under running water. This is a crucial step to prevent any dirt or harmful substances on the rind from contaminating the flesh as you cut.
Getting Ready for Safe Cutting
After drying the watermelon, confidently slice it in half right down the middle. Next, carefully trim off the round stem end and the bottom base to create flat surfaces. This prevents the watermelon from rolling around on your cutting board, ensuring safer slicing.
Choosing the Right Storage Container
Now, prepare a food container to store your watermelon. Flip the container upside down and place the cut side of the watermelon on top to roughly gauge the width and length. Trim the sides of the watermelon vertically to match the opening of the container.
Once the width is adjusted, stand the container next to the watermelon and estimate its height. If the watermelon is too tall for the container, the lid won't close. Trim the top horizontally to match or be slightly lower than the container's height. The key here is to pre-adjust the watermelon's dimensions in three dimensions: width, length, and height.
Finishing Touches for a Neat Cut
Carefully trim away the tough green rind from the edges of the watermelon. Make sure to cut away as much of the white part as possible, leaving minimal white rind on the red flesh. Then, cut the watermelon according to the width and length you measured earlier.
- First, make vertical cuts from top to bottom at regular intervals, creating long bar shapes.
- Then, lay these vertical strips on their sides and make a horizontal cut through the center.
Carefully gather these rectangular watermelon pieces without letting them fall apart and place them directly into your prepared container. Because you pre-adjusted the container's dimensions, they should fit perfectly.
Finally, make horizontal cuts across the top of the rectangular watermelon pieces inside the container, creating a grid pattern for bite-sized portions. By placing the larger pieces in the container first and then cutting them inside, you'll maintain their neat shape. This method makes it incredibly convenient to just grab a piece with a fork whenever you fancy a refreshing bite!
