The Link Between Pregnancy and Breast Cancer Suppression: A New Study

Recent studies suggest that women who have experienced pregnancy and childbirth tend to have a lower long-term risk of breast cancer. However, the exact reasons behind this phenomenon remain unclear. A new study by researchers at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Australia might offer some answers. This research indicates that specialized immune cells that reside in breast tissue during pregnancy are linked to the suppression of breast cancer.

Analysis of pregnancy's impact on breast cancer suppression

The Role of Immune Cells

Researchers discovered that breast tissue in women and mice with a history of childbirth had a higher proportion of tissue-resident memory-like T cells (TRM-like cells) compared to those without such experience. These T cells begin to increase in breast tissue from mid-pregnancy and persist even after childbirth and breastfeeding, contributing to tumor suppression.

Characteristics of TRM-like Cells

Unlike circulating immune cells, TRM-like cells remain in specific tissues, performing immune surveillance. The researchers also confirmed that during pregnancy, as breast tissue undergoes changes for milk production, these cells become closely distributed with breast epithelial cells. Notably, cytokines originating from breast epithelial cells, such as interleukin-15 (IL-15) and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), play a crucial role in the expansion of TRM-like cells.

Study Findings and Their Implications

The research team verified the actual involvement of TRM-like cells in tumor suppression using a mouse model. When TRM-like cells were removed from parous mice, the protective effect against breast tumors disappeared. Conversely, in nulliparous mice, enhancing the IL-2 receptor beta signal to induce TRM-like cells resulted in a protective effect against tumors. These findings suggest that pregnancy establishes a long-term resident immune cell population in breast tissue, which may contribute to suppressing future breast tumors.

Potential for Preventive Strategies

Professor Cara Britt stated, "The greater the number of T cells in breast tissue capable of detecting and attacking abnormal cells, such as cancer, the better the clinical outcomes observed." She explained that this study could serve as a new impetus for researching immune-based preventive strategies to reduce breast cancer incidence in high-risk women without a history of pregnancy. However, the researchers cautioned that these findings do not immediately translate into a proven breast cancer prevention method applicable to humans.

In conclusion, this study offers a novel perspective on the relationship between pregnancy and breast cancer, and we anticipate that further research will lead to the development of more concrete preventive strategies. Breast cancer risk is influenced by various factors, so it's not possible to definitively conclude that childbirth alone prevents breast cancer.
