West Nile Virus Cases Surge in the US

Transmission and Symptoms of West Nile Virus
West Nile Virus is transmitted by mosquitoes, and while 70-80% of infected individuals show no symptoms, the remaining 20% may experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, and vomiting. In rare cases, less than 1% of patients can develop neurological complications, necessitating caution. These symptoms tend to be more pronounced during the summer months, coinciding with the peak season for mosquito activity.
Increase in Mosquito Populations
So, what's driving the surge in West Nile Virus cases this year? Experts point to an increase in mosquito populations as a primary factor. Abundant rainfall from winter into spring created ideal conditions for mosquito egg hatching, and rising temperatures due to global warming have accelerated their breeding cycle. This climate shift is also advancing the transmission season for mosquito-borne diseases.

The situation in Korea is not entirely different. According to research by the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Research Institute of Public Health and Environment, mosquitoes that transmit malaria and dengue fever appeared earlier than usual this year. Notably, the discovery of the tropical house mosquito, a vector for West Nile Virus, in Korea for the first time has caused considerable unease. While previously, infections were often contracted during overseas travel, domestic vigilance is now crucial.

How should we respond to this situation? Firstly, efforts to control mosquitoes are essential in areas with high mosquito populations. Personally, using mosquito repellents and wearing long clothing during outdoor activities can be helpful. Eliminating stagnant water around homes to prevent mosquito breeding grounds is also vital.
