DIY Mosquito Trap: Clever Ways to Use Plastic Bottles at Home

As summer approaches, one pesky presence starts to bother us: mosquitoes. They tend to be especially rampant in the sweltering heat. Today, we'll explore how to use plastic bottles to get rid of mosquitoes in your home, along with some plants that are effective in repelling them.

How to get rid of mosquitoes at home with plastic bottles and plants

Mosquito Repellent Method Using Plastic Bottles

This method of catching mosquitoes using a plastic bottle is simple yet effective. Here are the materials you'll need:

  • 200ML of water (about 1 cup)
  • 50g of brown sugar (about 1/4 cup)
  • 1g of yeast (available at most supermarkets)
  • A 2L plastic bottle

Now, let's look at how to make it:

  1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
  2. Mix hot water and brown sugar, then let it cool before pouring it into the bottom of the bottle.
  3. Add the yeast to the sugar water at the bottom of the bottle. (No need to stir.)
  4. You can wrap the opening of the plastic bottle with plastic wrap and secure it with a rubber band.
  5. Make a hole in the center of the plastic bottle's opening and overlap it with the other half of the bottle containing the sugar water.
  6. Seal the overlapping part of the two bottle halves with tape, leaving the top part open.
  7. Now, place it outside your living areas, such as on a balcony or in a bathroom, rather than inside your home! Don't forget to replace it every two weeks.

With this, you can worry less about mosquitoes!

Plants Effective in Repelling Mosquitoes

Nature is full of plants that emit scents mosquitoes dislike. These plants are also good for your health and can even be used in cooking, offering a double benefit. Let's explore some useful plants for mosquito repellent:

  • Scented Geranium (Rose Geranium): A herb with a rose-like fragrance, effective in driving away mosquitoes.
  • Sichuan Pepper: Its pungent compounds strongly irritate and repel mosquitoes.
  • Cilantro (Coriander): Widely used in Southeast Asia, its scent can also deter mosquitoes.
  • Cinnamon: Its strong aroma is effective in repelling mosquitoes, and drinking it in a traditional Korean dessert (Sujeonggwa) is also beneficial for the skin.
  • Night-Scented Stock (Matthiola incana): Its strong fragrance makes mosquitoes avoid it.
  • Houttuynia cordata (Fish Mint): Its fishy odor has a mosquito-repelling effect.

Additional Tips to Avoid Mosquitoes

There are various ways to avoid mosquitoes. Here are a few tips:

  • Maintain good personal hygiene to eliminate body odor and foot odor.
  • Wearing light-colored clothing can help in avoiding mosquitoes.
  • Regularly clean stagnant water in bathrooms and sinks to prevent mosquito larvae from developing.
  • Place plants that mosquitoes dislike indoors.
  • Reduce the use of strong perfumes or colognes.

If you get bitten by a mosquito, resist the urge to scratch. It's best to soothe the itch with a mosquito bite relief lotion or an ice pack. Prevent mosquito bites and enjoy a healthy summer!
