Vascular Damage from Inflammation and How to Prevent It

They say inflammation is the root of all illness. Did you know that this seemingly small inflammation can wreak havoc on your entire body? Specifically, inflammation of the blood and blood vessels can be life-threatening and lead to severe disabilities. This is because when blood becomes thick and clots form, blood vessels can become blocked, cutting off circulation. As we reach middle age, aging compounds the issue, leading to an increase in inflammation. Therefore, the secret to a long and healthy life lies in our diet and exercise habits.

The Dangers of Inflammation Caused by Dehydration

Many people find themselves sweating a lot in their sleep these days. Even if it's not the peak of the heatwave, it's common to wake up with a damp back. During the approximately 7 hours of sleep, our bodies are deprived of hydration. This dehydration is exacerbated by sweating during sleep, which can lead to concerning changes in our blood. As blood thickens, individuals with high cholesterol, diabetes, or high blood pressure can be particularly affected. Therefore, it's crucial to rehydrate immediately upon waking. This also helps activate your metabolism.

The Starting Point of Inflammation: Poor Eating Habits

It's often said that inflammation mostly begins with poor lifestyle habits. Among these, diet is considered the biggest culprit. Excessive consumption of processed foods, simple sugars, and trans fats can heighten inflammatory responses in the gut. In severe cases, this inflammation can spread throughout the body. Furthermore, a lack of exercise is also a risk factor, as elevated blood sugar levels and weight gain can amplify inflammatory responses. Managing stress is also important. Increased cortisol hormone levels can trigger inflammation in the body, making it essential to get enough quality sleep.

Lack of Exercise, the Culprit of Obesity

Recent surveys indicate a rising obesity rate among Koreans. This is largely due to many people overeating while disliking exercise. When we indulge in high-calorie, high-fat, and high-carbohydrate foods without moving our bodies, fat accumulates, potentially leading to inflammation. According to data from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, only 27% of adults engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity five or more days a week. To suppress inflammation, we must expend energy through physical activity to prevent fat buildup in the body.

Foods Good for Preventing Inflammation

Excessive visceral fat can cause inflammation, leading to various diseases such as vascular diseases. To prevent and manage vascular inflammation, it's advisable to limit high-fat, high-calorie foods and ensure sufficient intake of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and seaweed, which are rich in dietary fiber, during meals. Dietary fiber helps reduce triglycerides and cholesterol in the body and prevents blood sugar spikes, aiding in inflammation prevention. Additionally, incorporating foods known for their anti-inflammatory properties, like onions, garlic, leeks, and ginger, is beneficial. Middle-aged individuals, in particular, should be more disciplined with their diet and stay physically active.

In conclusion, inflammation significantly impacts our health. It's crucial to prevent inflammation by improving lifestyle habits and adopting a proper diet. Shall we start making small efforts for a healthier life?
