Case Study: Lupus Diagnosis in a 30-Something Man
Lupus: A Sign of Autoimmune Disease
A recent case of a 34-year-old American man diagnosed with lupus has been drawing attention. This patient presented with spots on both of his calves that gradually enlarged over the past six months. The spots evolved into distinct, well-defined plaques without itching or pain. Notably, symptoms such as scaling and follicular plugging are known typical signs of lupus. Lupus is a type of autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the body's own tissues.
Diagnosis Process and Treatment
Before visiting the hospital, the patient had no specific external triggers or history of medication use. However, the skin lesions were diagnosed as discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), a form of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). For treatment, the research team prescribed the patient to avoid sun exposure and use a corticosteroid ointment. Additionally, hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), an immunomodulator, was prescribed to be taken twice daily.
Twelve weeks after treatment, the patient's symptoms significantly improved. Scaling and induration decreased, and fatigue and joint stiffness disappeared. This case seems to re-emphasize the importance of lupus diagnosis.
Gender Differences in Lupus
Lupus is well-known to be more prevalent in women. While the incidence rate in men is 9 times lower than in women, men are not immune to lupus. Particularly in men, diagnosis can be delayed due to the absence of typical symptoms. Caution is needed as it often affects the entire body, not just the skin as in this patient's case.
Lifestyle and Lupus
It is possible to develop lupus even with a healthy lifestyle. This patient developed an autoimmune disease despite having no history of obesity or smoking. Pressure on the lower extremities or reduced blood flow can affect the immune system. Therefore, attention should also be paid to posture and environment in the workplace and daily life.
- Sun protection is essential.
- Men should also be aware of the risk of lupus.
- If you experience fatigue or joint stiffness, it is advisable to get tested immediately.
Lupus can have a good prognosis if detected and treated early. While lupus can easily be mistaken for simple skin symptoms, it carries the risk of progressing throughout the body, so caution is advised. Remember the importance of regular health check-ups and careful observation.
