What is the National Pension Silver Loan?
If you are a National Pension recipient aged 60 or older, you can consider the National Pension Silver Loan to ensure a stable retirement life. This loan is a product offered at a low interest rate to those who need emergency funds and can be used for various purposes such as security deposits for jeonse (lump-sum deposit) and monthly rent, medical expenses, funeral expenses for a spouse, and disaster recovery funds. Eligibility and Conditions for Silver Loan Application
The eligibility for the National Pension Silver Loan is for National Pension recipients aged 60 or older residing in Korea. This includes recipients of old-age pensions, split pensions, survivor pensions, and disability pensions. However, the following individuals are not eligible to apply:
- Those whose pension payments are suspended or stopped
- Those who have not fully repaid a previous loan
- Foreigners and those residing abroad
- Individuals under guardianship (adult guardianship or limited guardianship)
- Those currently undergoing personal rehabilitation or bankruptcy proceedings
- Recipients of Grade 4 disability pension and recipients of basic livelihood security
Required Documents and Application Method
To apply for the Silver Loan, you need to prepare a few documents. The required documents vary depending on the purpose of the loan:
- For Jeonse and Monthly Rent Deposit Loans: Housing lease agreement, full copy of building registration, proof of deposit transfer for the contract deposit, previous contract documents
- For Medical Expense Loans: Medical expense statement, receipt, or National Health Insurance coverage details
- For Spouse's Funeral Expense Loans: Death certificate, funeral expense receipt
- For Disaster Recovery Fund Loans: Damage confirmation or fire certificate
Applicants can apply in person, and applications are accepted year-round at any National Pension Service branch nationwide. You can apply in person or via mobile, but please note that mobile applications are not available for specific purposes (jeonse/monthly rent deposits, medical expenses).
Loan Limit and Interest Rate
The loan limit for the National Pension Silver Loan is up to twice the annual pension amount you receive, limited to the actual amount of expenses incurred. However, the maximum limit is capped at 10 million KRW. For example, if your monthly pension is 450,000 KRW, the maximum loanable amount would be 10.8 million KRW, but you can only borrow up to the actual expense of 5 million KRW.
The interest rate is 2.51% per annum, which is the lower of the 5-year treasury bond yield or the weighted average deposit interest rate of commercial banks. The delinquency interest rate is 5.02% per annum, which is twice the loan interest rate.
Repayment Method and Important Notes
The loan funds will be disbursed to the account you designated within 3 days of signing the loan agreement. Repayment is made through the equal principal and interest installment method, with a maximum repayment period of 5 years. You must make principal and interest payments on the monthly pension payment date.
