Why You Shouldn't Drink Olive Oil on an Empty Stomach in the Morning

Many people are starting their day by taking a spoonful of olive oil on an empty stomach. With olive oil known as a healthful oil, more people have come to believe it positively impacts blood sugar stability and weight loss. However, experts warn that consuming olive oil on an empty stomach can actually be toxic to your health.

Why is Olive Oil Dangerous on an Empty Stomach?

Dr. Lee Jin-bok, a family physician who has treated obese patients for 30 years, stated via social media that "oil consumed in the morning can attack the stomach and pancreas." He explained that highly concentrated fats ingested on an empty stomach can relax the esophageal sphincter, becoming a major cause of acid reflux, heartburn, and nausea. Those suffering from acid reflux disease, in particular, may experience worsened heartburn by consuming olive oil on an empty stomach. People with weak stomachs should be cautious as it can lead to gas or diarrhea.

Impact on the Gallbladder and Pancreas

We also cannot overlook the potential for olive oil consumption on an empty stomach to cause diseases in the gallbladder and pancreas. Dr. Lee warned, "When it suddenly enters the body, the gallbladder contracts strongly to expel the oil." He added, "If you have gallstones you were unaware of, your bile duct could become blocked, potentially leading to severe abdominal pain." Furthermore, the pancreas can become overloaded by the sudden influx of oil, increasing the risk of inflammation.

Olive Oil Isn't Inherently Harmful

Olive oil itself is not harmful. In fact, olive oil is rich in antioxidants like polyphenols and Vitamin E, which help inhibit the production of free radicals and slow down cellular aging. Studies suggest that consuming olive oil promotes a feeling of fullness for a longer period, reducing snacking and thereby having a positive effect on weight loss.

How Should You Consume Olive Oil?

The issue lies in how you consume olive oil. The habit of eating it alone on an empty stomach can negatively impact your health, so it's best to consume olive oil with meals. Dr. Lee advises, "The cardiovascular disease prevention effects of olive oil are maximized when consumed with vegetables, fish, and nuts." He also mentioned that consuming it with tomatoes can increase the absorption rate of lycopene in olive oil by up to 15 times.

Therefore, if you've been forcing yourself to eat olive oil every morning despite its greasiness, it's recommended to stop immediately and enjoy it with your meals instead. Embrace the benefits of olive oil properly through healthy eating habits!
