Nutritionist Recommended! Healthy Rice Cooking Tips

Are you habitually just rinsing rice and pressing the cook button today as well? A bowl of rice, which you might think of as just a carbohydrate to fill your stomach, can become a healthy nourishing meal with just one additional ingredient. Today, we'll introduce nutritious rice dishes you can easily make at home.

30-Year Nutritionist Shares Tips for Cooking Healthy Rice

1. Seaweed Rice: A Tonic from the Sea

Dried seaweed needs to be soaked in lukewarm water for about 20 to 30 minutes until fully rehydrated. If you're sensitive to the fishy smell, try soaking it in water with a drop of vinegar. The vinegar not only neatly neutralizes the unique sea smell of seaweed but also makes its texture much softer. Once fully soaked, lightly rinse the seaweed under running water, squeeze out the excess water, and it's ready to be added to your rice.

Seaweed rice, made with seaweed, often called the 'elixir of life' from the sea, is one of the easiest tonics you can have on your dining table. Seaweed is rich in dietary fiber, which helps prevent rapid blood sugar spikes. It's also high in calcium and iron, beneficial for bone health and anemia prevention. When adding the prepared seaweed to the rice, remember to slightly reduce the amount of water you'd normally use, considering the moisture content of the seaweed itself – this is the subtle difference that makes the dish perfect.

Adding a tablespoon of perilla oil and gently mixing it with the rice and seaweed before cooking enhances the absorption of nutrients thanks to the omega-3 fatty acids in the perilla oil. This seaweed rice, served with just a simple seasoning sauce, can be a healthy meal as nourishing as any tonic.

2. Quinoa: The Perfect Nutritious Rice

The most crucial step before adding quinoa to your rice water is rinsing. Quinoa is coated with saponin, which can leave a bitter taste if not washed properly. Because the grains are very small, it's best to use a very fine sieve rather than a regular colander. Rinse it thoroughly under running water multiple times, rubbing gently. Continue rinsing until no more foam appears; this removes the bitterness, leaving only the naturally nutty and mild flavor of quinoa.

Quinoa, known as a superfood, has been called the mother of grains since the ancient Inca civilization, boasting a complete nutritional profile. It's particularly rich in essential amino acids and protein, which are often lacking in rice. Simply mixing quinoa into your rice can transform a carbohydrate-heavy meal into a high-protein, healthy dish.

After rinsing, mix the quinoa with rice and cook as usual. A good ratio to aim for is 7:3 or 8:2, with rice being the larger portion. Quinoa absorbs water well, so add a tiny bit more water than you normally would to maintain a chewy texture.

3. Turmeric Rice: The Secret to Antioxidant Power

Turmeric is rich in curcumin, which is excellent for reducing inflammation in the body and maintaining vascular health. By simply adding turmeric powder to your daily rice, you can expect powerful antioxidant effects.

The key considerations when making turmeric rice are the amount used and how it's mixed. Turmeric powder has a strong aroma and flavor, so for about 2-3 servings of rice, half a teaspoon is sufficient. Simply sprinkling the powder on the rice can cause clumping, so it's best to dissolve it in the cooking water beforehand.

To maximize nutrient absorption, the secret is adding a little oil and pepper. Curcumin, the main active compound in turmeric, is fat-soluble. Adding a drop of olive oil or perilla oil while cooking allows for much better absorption in the body. Piperine in black pepper also amplifies the effects of curcumin.

As you can see, simply adding a few ingredients can make our meals healthier. How about cooking a delicious and nutritious rice dish tonight?
